Law on autonomous Russian Internet adopted by the Federation Council

Law on autonomous Russian Internet adopted by the Federation Council

The Federation Council voted to adopt the law on autonomous Internet in Russia. According to the law, all traffic in RuNet (Russian-language community on the Internet and websites) should be transmitted using Russian encryption tools. According to experts, this will help facilitate the secret services to decipher messages.

The law also states that the cabinet will establish the procedure for issuing and using codes and encryption tools and will also determine the persons authorized to do so. Domestic encryption will also be used in state information systems.

The Autonomous Internet Law will enter into force on November 1, 2019 if it is signed by the President of Russia. How much this law can affect small and medium-sized businesses is unknown, expert opinions on this issue are divided. In our opinion, this will not lead to strong changes.
